With Tropical Storm Debby moving closer to the Wilmington area, local school districts and colleges are monitoring the rapidly evolving situation.

Brunswick County Schools
Due to the threat of inclement weather associated with Tropical Storm Debby, Brunswick County Schools will be closed for all student activities on Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 7-8. Brunswick County Early College High School will dismiss at 11 a.m. Tuesday and operate on a remote learning schedule Wednesday and Thursday, according to a message on the school district's website.
If conditions improve, Brunswick County Early College High School and all district student activities will operate on a normal schedule on Friday, Aug. 9. A decision will be made no later than Thursday at 3 p.m.
Wednesday-Friday will be optional workdays. All buildings will be open from 7 a.m.–5 p.m. for employees who choose to report to work.
New Hanover County Schools
Due to the potentially severe impacts of Tropical Storm Debby, including flooding and hazardous road conditions, New Hanover County Schools will continue remote learning on Thursday, according to a news release from the school district.
- Specialty High Schools (WECHS, SEA-Tech, and Isaac Bear): The start date for specialty high schools will be delayed until school resumes. Families will receive a call from their principal about the new start date.
- Remote Learning: Schools that are already in session (Codington, Eaton, Snipes, Freeman and Lake Forest) will shift to remote learning for Thursday. Teachers will provide instructions and resources so that students can continue their learning from home.
Since this is still a developing situation, the school district will continue to monitor the conditions and update families on Friday's school schedule as soon as possible. Flooding and transportation challenges may continue, which could affect the district's ability to resume school as normal.
Pender County Schools
In light of the severe weather conditions expected Tuesday evening, Pender County Schools will close all facilities and canceling all after-school events starting at 4 p.m., according to a news release from the school district. This decision affects all schools and administrative buildings within the district.
In a news release Monday, the district said schools will be closed for all students and non-emergency staff on Wednesday and Thursday. This closure includes all after-school activities and athletic events. Emergency staff will be notified individually if they are needed to report to work on these days.
Penderlea and Pender Early College students who are currently at school will be safely dismissed on time, and all scheduled after-school activities, including athletic events, will not proceed. Parents and guardians are advised to make arrangements for early pick-up if necessary.
Penderlea School and Pender Early College will transition to virtual instruction on Wednesday and Thursday. Students will be provided with learning materials on Tuesday. Students in grades 3-8 at Penderlea will engage in remote learning through Google Classroom, while students in grades 9-13 at Pender Early College will also participate in remote learning through Canvas.
Cape Fear Academy
Cape Fear Academy will be closed on Wednesday and Thursday, according to a news release from the school. All athletic and extra-curricular activities are canceled. A decision will be made Thursday afternoon to determine if the school will be open Friday.
Cape Fear Community College
Due to the threat of inclement weather from Tropical Storm Debby, Cape Fear Community College has canceled all classes scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday at all campus facilities, according to a news release from the school. The Bonnie Sanders Burney Child Development Center will also be closed on these dates.
While campus facilities will be closed, CFCC staff will be available by phone and email to assist students.
Brunswick Community College
Due to the threat of severe weather, Brunswick Community College and all campus locations will closeTuesday at 11 a.m.and remain closed onWednesday andThursday, according to a news release from the school.
Classes will take place remotely where possible.

This closure includes the Dinah E. Gore Sports & Aquatics Complex and the Odell Williamson Auditorium.
Brunswick Community College's student orientation, initially planned for Thursday, has been rescheduled to Wednesday, Aug. 14.
The rescheduled orientation will occur at Odell Williamson Auditorium starting at 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 14. The college encourages all new students to attend the orientation to ensure a smooth transition into the upcoming academic year.
